Douglas Barlar - Music Department Chair

Dr. Douglas Barlar came to Florida College in 1976 to start a formal band program and to rehearse the Friends group. From 1976 to 2001 he directed the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, String Ensemble, basketball Pep Band, and the band program at Florida College Academy. He rehearsed the Friends group during most years between 1976 and 2009 and traveled with them extensively on national tours from 2000 to 2008. He also served as Director of Advising from 1991 to 2007. From 2001 to 2009 he served as Dean of Student Services while still teaching part-time in the Music Department.
As Department Chair, Dr. Barlar led the college and Music Department in developing the four-year Bachelor of Arts in Music and the Bachelor of Science in Music Education, along with accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music and gaining approval for the Music Education degree from the Florida Department of Education.

His current teaching load includes Music History, Music Theory, tuba, brass and percussion techniques classes and the internship and senior seminar for music education majors. He serves as an adjudicator for the Florida Bandmasters Association and on accreditation teams for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Dr. Barlar earned the Ph.D. in Music Education and Higher Education Administration from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education, the Master of Music in Tuba Performance from Peabody College and the B.S. in Music Education from Middle Tennessee State University. His areas of research include sources of motivation of college music faculty members.

He has presented at research sessions of the Florida Music Education Association annual conference, served as President of the Florida College Music Educators Association (a state organization of college and university music teachers), served two years as a board member of the Florida Music Education Association, and wrote a monthly column for the Florida Music Director (1981-1983).

Dr. Barlar’s teachers on tuba include Bobby Lee (band director at Giles County High School and later Austin Peay State University), Horace Beasley at MTSU, and Henry Romersa at Peabody College. He has performed professionally on tuba, string bass and bass guitar. His military experience included the 82nd Airborne Division Band and the Tennessee National Guard Band. In addition to his teaching, Dr. Barlar has preached for congregations in Tampa, Riverview, and for thirty years in St. Petersburg. He is a member and Past-President of the Rotary Club of Tampa North.

He has been married since 1969 to Becky, who retired from Florida College in 2016 after over thirty years of teaching piano and music theory. They have four children and five grandchildren.
