Band Scholarships

Each year, deserving students can apply for a band scholarship.

Deadline: All below application steps must be completed by May 31 of the college enrollment year.

A band scholarship is awarded based on the applicant's playing ability, the amount of funds available, and the number of ensembles a student joins. If a student chooses to participate in more ensembles, it equates to more scholarships.

Band scholarships are awarded for one academic year. Returning students can reapply for a scholarship every year. Students on academic probation or those placed on disciplinary probation after a suspension become ineligible to receive Band scholarships.

Concert wind and percussion players: Audition in person or email videos to [email protected], performing the below materials:
- Play these scales as many octaves as possible -- Concert Db major, Concert A major and Concert C harmonic minor.
- Play the chromatic scale (covering your entire range) by tonguing up and slurring down. (Articulations are for woodwinds & brass.)
- Play two solo or etude excerpts, each one to two minutes long, with one excerpt demonstrating technical ability and the other showcasing musicality.
- Concert percussionists should perform as many of the major instruments (snare, timpani, and a mallet instrument) as you are comfortable with. One excerpt per instrument will be sufficient. Demonstration of proficiency on auxiliary instruments can also be beneficial.

Jazz drum set players with no concert band experience: Audition in person or email videos to [email protected], playing all the jazz styles that you know. This can include swing (fast, medium, and slow), ballads (with brushes), rock, funk, and various forms of Latin.

Guitarists, bassists, and pianists with no concert band experience: Contact Mr. Rainwater for instructions at [email protected].

Optional (but beneficial) steps:
- Submit evidence of selection for an All-State, All-County or All-District ensemble or of participation in an Honor Band to which you were nominated. Suitable evidence is a copy of a program, an official letter of notification, or a letter from your high school director.
- Submit a letter of recommendation from your high school director.

Please contact Mr. Brian Rainwater at [email protected] if you have further questions.

Chorus Scholarships

Each year, scholarships are awarded to promising students who may be of benefit to the chorus. Students must audition to receive scholarships.

Florida College offers students the opportunity to audition for the Chorus on the Sunday afternoon and evening before classes begin. Auditions are open to all students regardless of their major. If you would like to audition, please email Dr. Jon Bassett at [email protected] or sign up on the Chorus Room door, King 223.

Dudy Walker Voice Scholarship

In memory of long-time choir director Dudy Walker, various scholarships are available to talented vocalists.

One does not need to be a music major to apply. The only requirement is to sign up for at least 1 credit of private vocal study. The audition can either be live, on campus, or by sending a video. You will need to prepare two songs of your choice that best showcases your voice.

To apply, please email Dr. Jon Bassett at [email protected].

Piano Scholarships

All auditions must be completed by August 11. Please contact us for an audition time. For your audition you will be asked to play two or three pieces of contrasting styles from memory (a minimum of 10 minutes of music). If you are unable to audition in person, please send us a copy of your audition. Acceptable formate include: DVD, USB, YouTube links or any other cloud sharing platform.
